Renowned Pan-Africanist, legal scholar, and public intellectual, Prof. Patrick Lumumba, has been confirmed as the keynote speaker for the Democracy Day Conference 2026 scheduled to hold on June 10 in Abuja.
The announcement was made by the President of Nigeria Youths in Politics, Hon. Blessing Oyefeso, during a pre-event press conference held ahead of the highly anticipated gathering themed, “Now Is The Time: Youths Building a Sustainable Democracy.”
According to Oyefeso, the conference aims to bring together past and present leaders, policymakers, youth leaders, students, professionals, and stakeholders from across the country to discuss the future of Nigeria’s democracy and the role of young people in nation-building as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
He described Prof. Lumumba as one of Africa’s most respected voices on governance, leadership, and democratic development, noting that his keynote address is expected to inspire critical conversations on ethical leadership, youth inclusion, and sustainable democratic institutions.
“His wealth of knowledge, passion for African development, and commitment to ethical leadership will undoubtedly inspire meaningful conversations on the future of democracy and youth leadership in Nigeria and across Africa,” Oyefeso stated.
The conference will also feature the inauguration of the Nigeria Youths in Politics National Working Committee, a body mandated to drive youth electoral participation and monitor electoral processes towards ensuring peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in 2027.
Another major highlight of the event will be the Nigeria Youths in Politics Hall of Fame Induction , where distinguished leaders and personalities who have made remarkable contributions to national development, youth empowerment, philanthropy, and public service will be recognized.
Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, who will serve as the Father of the Occasion, and former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, Chairman of the Occasion, are among the prominent personalities expected at the conference.
Others to be honoured include Barrister Seyi Tinubu, Prince Arthur Eze, Prof. Jerry Gana, and Engr. Mathew Tonlagha for their contributions to leadership, nation-building, and youth development.
Organizers say the conference is designed to commemorate Nigeria’s democratic journey while encouraging greater youth participation in governance and leadership at all levels.
The Democracy Day Conference 2026 is being organized by Nigeria Youths in Politics as part of efforts to deepen democratic values, promote civic engagement, and build a sustainable democratic future for Nigeria.
