Chakraborty had reportedly been brought from Sribhumi to Silchar after his condition became critical due to a liver-related illness.

Video footage showing the ambulance waiting as the Chief Minister’s convoy passed through the area was later circulated online.

The Times of India reported that four police personnel who were on duty during the incident were suspended after the ambulance was stopped to make way for the convoy.

Following the incident, Sarma apologised to Chakraborty’s family and described the stoppage of the ambulance as unacceptable.

The Chief Minister said:

“Emergency medical care must take precedence over VIP movement,”

He added:

“Under no circumstances should the movement of ambulances or other emergency vehicles be impeded on account of VIP convoy arrangements.”

Sarma also warned that guidelines governing convoy movements must be implemented “in letter and spirit.”

However, while expressing condolences following Chakraborty’s death, the Chief Minister said the patient’s underlying medical condition and the ambulance’s brief stoppage were not connected.

“The patient was suffering from a critical liver ailment and his death is not related to the brief halt,” he told reporters in Nagaon.

Sarma also said that anyone occupying the position of Chief Minister was “merely a chief servant” and stated that “new Assam has no place for VIP culture.”

Chakraborty’s wife, meanwhile, said the family had lost its breadwinner and appealed to the Chief Minister for financial assistance.

She said:

“He has left behind two children. I urge the chief minister to help my family survive in the absence of it lone earning member,”
