BREAKING: Tinubu sacks Wale Edun, appoints new finance minister

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly sacked Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, of his duties in a cabinet shake-up.

Also affected in the reshuffle is Umar Dangiwa, who served as Minister of Housing and Urban Development as reported by the Daily Trust.

The development was confirmed in a memo issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

According to the directive, Edun is expected to hand over responsibilities to Mr Taiwo Oyedele, who has now been appointed as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Oyedele previously served as Minister of State for Finance.

In the same vein, Dr Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been appointed as ministerial nominee and designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

The memo further instructed Umar Dangiwa to formally transfer duties to the Minister of State within the ministry.

It also set Thursday, April 23, 2026, as the deadline for all handover and takeover processes to be concluded.

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Akume stated that the changes are intended to improve coordination within government and enhance economic delivery under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He added that the President exercised his constitutional authority under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in approving the reshuffle.

Akume also conveyed the President’s appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service to the nation and wished them success in their future endeavours.

He further reassured members of the Federal Executive Council that the process of government restructuring and revitalisation would remain ongoing.
