Zenith Bank Launches Google Pay in Nigeria, Expands Contactless Payment Options

Zenith Bank Plc has introduced Google Pay for eligible customers in Nigeria, allowing cardholders to make contactless payments using compatible smartphones and complete online transactions without repeatedly entering their card details.

The development forms part of the bank’s efforts to expand digital payment services and provide customers with additional options for conducting everyday financial transactions.

According to a statement issued by the bank, customers can now add eligible Zenith Bank payment cards to Google Wallet and use them at participating contactless payment terminals.

The service also supports payments on compatible websites and mobile applications, providing an alternative to conventional card transactions that require users to enter payment information manually.

Zenith Bank explained that the payment system uses tokenisation technology, which substitutes customers’ actual card numbers with digital tokens during transactions.

The technology is designed to reduce the exposure of sensitive card information and strengthen payment security across supported digital channels.

With the integration, customers using compatible devices can complete transactions by tapping their smartphones at enabled payment terminals, subject to merchant acceptance and card eligibility.

The bank said the initiative reflects its commitment to improving customer experience through investments in financial technology and digital banking infrastructure.

Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank, Dame Adaora Umeoji, described the development as part of the institution’s technology-driven approach to banking.

She also highlighted the bank’s upcoming Tech Fair 2026, scheduled for November 5, as another platform for exploring technological innovation and emerging opportunities in financial services.

The event, tagged Future Forward 6.0, is expected to further discussions around the role of technology in transforming banking and other sectors of the economy.

Zenith Bank’s latest initiative builds on its previous investments in electronic banking infrastructure.

In 2007, the bank established what it described as Nigeria’s first automated teller machine gallery, providing customers with access to cash services outside conventional banking hours.

The introduction of Google Pay comes as financial institutions continue to develop digital payment channels in response to changing consumer preferences and increasing smartphone usage.

For Nigeria’s banking industry, the integration highlights growing interest in contactless payments and the use of digital wallets to facilitate financial transactions.

However, the service’s adoption will depend on the availability of compatible devices, supported cards and payment terminals capable of processing contactless transactions.

Zenith Bank advised eligible customers to add their supported cards through the Google Wallet application and complete the required verification process before making payments.
