Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) has reported a profit after tax of N707.4 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, representing a marginal increase of 1% from N702.4 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
The pan-African banking group disclosed this in its unaudited financial statements for the nine-month period, showing mixed performance across key financial indicators when measured in Nigerian naira.
According to the results, gross earnings declined by 1% to N3.50 trillion from N3.55 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025.
Similarly, revenue decreased by 1% to N2.69 trillion compared with N2.71 trillion recorded a year earlier.
Despite the decline in naira-denominated revenue, Ecobank maintained a relatively stable operating performance, with operating profit before impairment charges standing at N1.40 trillion, largely unchanged from the previous year.
Profit before tax also remained broadly flat at N1.01 trillion, compared with N1.015 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025.
However, the group’s earnings per share from continuing operations attributable to shareholders increased by 2% to 2,030.17 kobo, equivalent to approximately N20.30 per share from 1,986.22 kobo or N19.86, a year earlier.
The financial statements also showed changes in Ecobank’s balance sheet during the period.
Total assets stood at N47.92 trillion as of September 30, 2026, representing a 4% decline from N49.66 trillion recorded at the end of December 2025.
Loans and advances to customers declined by 6% to N15.95 trillion from N16.96 trillion, indicating a reduction in the naira value of the group’s outstanding customer loan portfolio.
In contrast, customer deposits increased by 1% to N36.70 trillion from N36.44 trillion at the end of 2025.
The increase in deposits came despite the reduction in total assets and customer loans, highlighting the different movements across the group’s major balance-sheet components.
Total equity declined by 5% to N3.90 trillion from N4.12 trillion over the same period.
Although Ecobank recorded limited earnings growth in naira terms, its financial statements showed stronger performance when measured in US dollars.
Profit after tax increased by 13% to $515.8 million, while revenue advanced by 12% to $1.96 billion.
The differences between the dollar and naira growth rates highlight the influence of currency translation on the reported performance of a banking group operating across multiple African markets.
For investors, Ecobank’s nine-month results reflect resilient profitability and modest deposit growth, alongside a contraction in the naira value of its assets, customer loans and shareholders’ equity.
