“Why didn’t anyone warn us?” – Nigerian lady opens up on harsh reality of living in Canada

A Nigerian lady has sparked conversations online after opening up about the reality of living in Canada, saying life abroad is far from the dream many people in Nigeria imagine.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she admitted that before relocating, she believed people living overseas enjoyed an easy and comfortable lifestyle. However, after settling in Canada, she realised that the reality was completely different.

According to her, life in the North American country can be difficult, lonely and, at times, boring. She urged Nigerians back home to regularly check on their family members and friends living abroad.

In her words, she said:

“Why didn’t anyone warn us that life abroad could be this hard? Just look at Canada. It’s tough, boring and very lonely here. Nigerians back home, if you have family or friends abroad, please call and check on them.”

The lady explained that many people assume those living overseas are enjoying life simply because they reside in developed countries, but insisted that many immigrants silently struggle with loneliness, isolation and the pressure of adapting to a completely different environment.

Reflecting on her own experience, she said relocating to Canada completely changed her perspective on life abroad.

“When I was in Nigeria, I thought people abroad were living the dream. Now that I’m here, I know it’s not as easy as it looks. Just look at me,” she added.

Her emotional confession has since generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians living abroad agreeing with her, while others shared their own experiences of adjusting to life outside the country.
