The United Nations (UN) has dismissed claims alleging that it appointed Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who called himself the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), to a role in the UN Youth Office.
The UN Youth Office in a letter dated July 27, 2026, with reference number UNYO-2026-0017, sent through Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York explained that Adeyemi has never been appointed, employed, or connected to the organisation.
He was never allowed to represent the office or the United Nations in any way.
This clarification came in as a response to a note from Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN, sent on July 1, which asked for clarification about Adeyemi’s supposed appointment and related documents.
In its reply, the UN Youth Office said Adeyemi “holds no appointment, employment, or affiliation of any kind with the Office.”
The office also said he was never given permission to act or speak for the office or for the United Nations as a whole.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, shared the update and said the UN’s response had answered all questions about Adeyemi’s supposed appointment.
He added that the clarification also resolved issues about documents that were said to link Adeyemi to the organisation.
The situation also led to claims of forgery involving the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, over documents said to be connected to Adeyemi’s alleged appointment.
Ibrahim said the UN’s official statement made it clear that there is no reason to present Adeyemi as an official appointee or representative of the UN Youth Office.
The Nigerian envoy encouraged journalists and the public to use only official information from the United Nations and relevant authorities when reporting on international appointments.
He warned that using unverified documents or claims could spread false information and harm the reputations of people and organisations.
