Why there’s power outages in Lagos, Abuja – FG explains

The Federal Government has said the recent drop in electricity supply in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara, and Oyo states is due to limited gas supply, reduced hydroelectric power, and maintenance issues.

TheNewsGuru reports that the Federal Ministry of Power made this known in a statement signed by Adeola Adelabu, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, in which he stressed that these issues are not caused by a major national grid failure.

The Power Ministry explained that early findings show the reduced electricity supply is due to operational and maintenance problems in the power sector, as well as lower generation because of insufficient gas for thermal stations and less water for hydroelectric plants.

The Ministry noted that these areas had seen better electricity supply recently, but the new disruptions have caused problems for homes, businesses, and public institutions.

The Ministry recognised the public’s concerns and said it understands the frustration of Nigerians who had started to enjoy more stable electricity.

The Ministry added that the Minister is working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), and electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to fix these problems and bring back normal electricity supply.

According to the Ministry, Tegbe has reached out to the key operators to resolve the operational issues, speed up maintenance, and ensure the public gets regular updates on efforts to restore power.

The Ministry assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to sustaining recent improvements in the power sector and making electricity supply more reliable across the country.

The Ministry also asked the public for patience and understanding and promised to share more updates as work to restore electricity continues.
