“This Restriction Was Not Implemented By TikTok” — Platform Denies Blocking Service In Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto

TikTok has denied responsibility for reported restrictions affecting access to its platform in parts of Northern Nigeria, following complaints from users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states.

The social media company said it was aware of reports that some users in the affected states had experienced difficulties accessing and using the platform, but maintained that it did not impose any restriction on its services.

TikTok’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, Keagile Makgoba, made the clarification in a statement on Monday.

“We can confirm that this restriction was not implemented by TikTok,” Makgoba said.

She added that the company was engaging relevant stakeholders in an effort to understand and resolve the reported access difficulties, while reaffirming TikTok’s commitment to ensuring that its communities can access the platform.

The clarification followed concerns raised by a coalition of civil society organisations over alleged disruptions to TikTok services in parts of Northern Nigeria.

According to the organisations, users in Kaduna, Kebbi, Kano and Sokoto states had experienced difficulties loading videos, viewing content and uploading materials since September 14.

The coalition called for an independent investigation into the disruption and urged relevant government authorities and telecommunications operators to establish its cause.

It also asked the authorities to publicly clarify whether the reported difficulties resulted from a government directive, action by telecommunications operators or a technical problem.

TikTok, however, has distanced itself from the restrictions, insisting that it did not initiate any measure limiting access to its platform in the affected states.
