Former Kogi West Senator Questions Vice President’s Performance, Cites Persistent Insecurity in the North-East
Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has criticised Vice President Kashim Shettima, arguing that his record in public office does not justify another term in office ahead of the 2027 general election.
Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made his position known in an article titled “A Record That Cannot Carry a Second Term,” published on his verified X account.
In the article, the former lawmaker questioned Shettima’s achievements during his tenure as governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019, particularly in addressing insecurity and the Boko Haram insurgency.
He also referenced the April 2014 abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, which occurred while Shettima was governor, describing it as one of the most prominent symbols of the insurgency.
Melaye further expressed concern over continued security challenges in the North-East, including reported attacks on military facilities, abductions and the displacement of communities.
He cited reported incidents in Marte and Chibok, as well as the abduction of girls in Askira/Uba, arguing that the persistence of such incidents raises questions about the region’s security situation.
According to Melaye, Shettima’s previous positions as governor, senator and now vice president should be assessed based on measurable results rather than the offices he has occupied.
“These cannot justify a second term for Shettima,” Melaye said, referring to the security challenges he highlighted.
He maintained that political leaders seeking re-election should be judged by their performance and the impact of their leadership on the lives of citizens.
Melaye’s comments add to the growing political debate surrounding the 2027 general election and the performance of the current administration.
