A fierce gun battle between security forces and heavily armed bandits has sent shockwaves through Sifawa village, just 20 kilometres from Sokoto’s state capital, with unconfirmed reports indicating multiple terrorist casualties.
The confrontation erupted when bandits transporting a large herd of suspected rustled cattle attempted to evade capture by opening fire on troops at the Forward Operating Base in Sifawa. Security operatives responded with overwhelming force, triggering a firefight that reverberated through the community.
“It was terrifying,” a local source told Elanza News. “The exchange was so intense that every resident in the village sought cover.”
Sifawa, located in Bodinga Local Government Area, holds strategic significance as the home of the Secretary to the Sokoto State Government, Bello Sifawa, and former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya. The village also hosts a modern College of Health Sciences.
The incident has heightened fears among residents, particularly following recent intelligence warnings from the Department of State Security about potential attacks on tertiary institutions in the region.
Witnesses revealed that fleeing terrorists retaliated against nearby communities, including Badau and Danchadi, as they retreated from the combat zone.
While casualty figures remain unconfirmed, locals have commended the swift response of security agencies, expressing confidence that a significant number of bandits were neutralised.
Alhaji Aminu Mohammed, a resident of Sifawa, expressed deep concern over the development, noting that the village has long been considered one of the most security-fortified areas in the region.
“This incident will undoubtedly heighten anxiety among farming communities across Bodinga,” Mohammed stated.
Sources indicate that farmers in vulnerable areas had been previously advised to harvest their grains as a precautionary measure against potential crossfire during ongoing military operations.
Residents across affected communities have been urged to maintain vigilance, avoid approaching operational zones, and strictly adhere to security directives.
Confirming the incident, Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufa’i, assured that adequate security personnel had been deployed and were managing the situation.
“We appeal to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with security forces,” Rufa’i said. “The safety of lives and property remains our top priority.”
