The Nigeria Police Force has appealed to Nigerians to remain calm following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa, warning against any form of retaliation against South African citizens, businesses, or interests within Nigeria.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Friday, May 30, 2026, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid.
According to the statement, the development was reviewed during a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, under the chairmanship of the National Security Adviser. Security and intelligence agencies subsequently carried out a comprehensive assessment of the situation to determine its implications and appropriate response measures.
The Force assured citizens that there is no immediate threat warranting panic, noting that the Federal Government is actively engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to address the situation and safeguard Nigerians both at home and abroad.
While acknowledging public concern over the reported attacks, the police cautioned against resorting to self-help or unlawful actions.
The statement stressed that reprisals, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech, and any actions capable of disrupting public peace or national security remain criminal offences and would not be tolerated.
The Force emphasized that Nigeria is governed by the rule of law and that every individual legally residing in the country, regardless of nationality, is entitled to protection under the law.
It further warned that any attempt to target South African nationals, diplomatic missions, businesses, or other legitimate interests in Nigeria would be treated as a criminal act and prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.
The police also urged members of the public to exercise restraint in their use of social media and avoid circulating unverified, inflammatory, or provocative information capable of escalating tensions or undermining efforts to resolve the situation.
According to the statement, security agencies have already strengthened surveillance and deployed personnel to strategic locations, including critical national infrastructure, foreign missions, and other sensitive facilities, to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property, maintenance of public order, and preservation of national security, urging Nigerians to remain law-abiding and go about their lawful activities without fear.
It also expressed appreciation for the cooperation and understanding of citizens, assuring the public that relevant government institutions are actively managing the situation in the interest of national security and Nigeria’s international relations.
