The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for stronger security measures in schools across the state and the country.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to advocating a safer Nigeria where no family would have to endure the trauma of kidnapping and prolonged captivity.
Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, the Lagos State PDP Publicity Secretary, Prince Dr Christopher Odianarewo, described the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State as a moment of relief and thanksgiving.
He said the party’s immediate concern was to celebrate the reunion of the victims with their families and loved ones after nearly two months in the kidnappers’ den.
He commended the security agencies for what he described as their professionalism, resilience and coordinated efforts, which culminated in the successful rescue of the victims.
The party also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for providing leadership throughout the period of the victims’ captivity.
According to him, Makinde remained actively engaged by supporting security operations, strengthening intelligence gathering and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of residents.
He stated that the successful rescue reflected the governor’s proactive approach to security and crisis management.
On the role of the Federal Government, he said Nigerians would judge its response by the length of time the victims remained in captivity before regaining their freedom.
While acknowledging that the eventual rescue deserved commendation, the party noted that the 56-day ordeal endured by the victims and their families highlighted the urgent need for stronger preventive security measures, faster emergency response mechanisms, and improved coordination among all levels of government and security agencies.
He, however, stressed that the priority should remain gratitude for the safe return of the victims and appreciation for everyone who played a role in securing their freedom.
