The Kano Emirate on Tuesday announced the death of the District Head of Dorayi, Alhaji Shehu Kabiru Bayero, who died in Egypt, throwing the emirate into mourning.
The late traditional ruler, who held the title of Barde Kerarriyar, was redeployed to Dorayi in 2025 by the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, after serving as District Head of Gwarzo and earlier Takai Local Government Area.
The emirate announced Bayero’s death in a statement posted on its official Facebook page.
It prayed for Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give his family and the Kano Royal House the strength to bear the loss.
Details surrounding his death were not disclosed.
The emirate also did not announce arrangements for the return of his remains to Nigeria or his burial as of press time.
Bayero’s death marks the end of a long career in public service spanning more than three decades in the Nigeria Police Force before his appointment into the Kano traditional institution.
He joined the police as a constable in 1970 and rose through the ranks to become a Commissioner of Police.
He served as Commissioner of Police in Gombe and Osun states before retiring after 35 years in service.
His traditional career began in 2006 when the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, appointed him Barde Kerarriya.
He later served as District Head of Takai before becoming District Head of Gwarzo.
In 2025, he was redeployed to the newly created Dorayi District by Sanusi II.
Bayero also came from a family with a longstanding connection to Kano’s traditional and security institutions.
His father, the late Kabiru Bayero, served as the Native Authority Police Chief before being appointed Barde Kerarriya by the late Emir Muhammadu Sanusi I.
Kabiru Bayero was later succeeded as a local police chief by his brother, the late Emir Ado Bayero, in the 1950s.
His death is expected to be felt across the Kano Emirate, particularly among the traditional institution and communities where he served.
As of press time, the emirate had yet to announce the funeral arrangements or when his remains would be brought back from Egypt.
