The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested two Nigerien nationals and nine others in connection with alleged cattle rustling operations across four local government areas.
Command spokesperson SP Lawan Shiisu confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Wednesday in Dutse, describing the operation as part of sustained efforts to combat animal theft and other criminal activities throughout the state.
The two Nigerien suspects, both from Maradi in the Niger Republic, were apprehended alongside nine Nigerian accomplices from Gwaram, Gwiwa, Hadejia, and Taura LGAs.
Swift Operation Recovers Livestock
The suspects, aged between 18 and 35, were arrested following prompt responses to credible intelligence and distress reports. Police operatives, working in collaboration with a vigilante group, intercepted the suspects before they could successfully dispose of the stolen animals.
Recovered exhibits include:
· 27 sheep
· 10 goats
· Three cows
· Two operational motor vehicles allegedly used in the criminal activities
Investigation Ongoing
SP Shiisu confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate. All suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of inquiries.
The police spokesperson reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to preventing crime and criminal activities across all parts of Jigawa State.
