A woman has sparked debate online after explaining why she believes her husband should bear the full financial responsibility of the family.
In a viral video, she said she does not believe her husband should ask her to contribute towards expenses such as their children’s school fees.
‘My money is my money’
According to the woman, her earnings should remain hers, while her husband’s income should cater for the family.
“My husband cannot say I should come and pay school fees with him. It’s not done. My money is my money. His money is for all of us,” she said.
She argued that providing for the family is the husband’s responsibility under Islamic teachings.
“He has to provide everything and this is according to Islam. That is what Islam says,” she added.
The woman also compared marriage responsibilities to the upbringing and standard of living a woman experienced before marriage.
She said her parents provided food and accommodation for her while she was growing up, and she expects her husband to provide similarly.
“My parents catered for me. They fed me, they housed me. So you should be able to give me same,” she said.
She speaks about marrying within similar backgrounds
The woman further argued that people should consider social and economic backgrounds when choosing marriage partners.
She claimed that Islam encourages people to marry within similar social circumstances to avoid difficulties caused by major differences in lifestyle.
“In fact, Islamically, you are supposed to marry. You are encouraged to marry within the same status,” she said.
Using an example, she compared a woman raised in an affluent environment with domestic staff to someone from a less privileged background.
“You can’t pick a child from Banana Island and take her to mileagege. How will she survive?” she asked.
She argued that a woman accustomed to having maids and chefs may struggle if she is suddenly expected to perform household chores after marriage.
“You can’t pick a child that has grown maids and chefs and everybody around. So asking her to come and do her laundry by herself or ask her to come and start washing your clothes because you are the man. No,” she said.
Her comments have generated discussions online, with social media users debating financial responsibilities, household duties and expectations in marriage.
