“I was scared of divorce” – Man seeks legal advice after siblings allegedly claim properties hid in late mother’s name

A Nigerian man has sought legal advice after revealing that properties he bought in his late mother’s name are now being claimed by his siblings as part of her estate.

In an account shared on TikTok, he explained that he intentionally registered all his assets in his mother’s name because he didn’t want his wife to know the extent of his wealth and feared losing them if she ever filed for divorce.

“I bought so many properties in my mum’s name because I didn’t want my wife to know about them. I also thought that if she ever filed for divorce, they wouldn’t find anything in my name.”

According to him, the assets include four houses, five plots of land, two cars, a primary and secondary school bearing his mother’s initials, as well as the family house where he currently lives.

He admitted that throughout his marriage, his wife believed he had little money, which led them to split household expenses equally.

“The major problem now is how do I tell my wife that I own all these properties but they are in my mum’s name? I made her believe I didn’t have money, so we’ve been doing 50/50 in our marriage,” he added.

Following his mother’s death, the man said his siblings insisted that everything registered in her name belonged to her and must be shared equally among the children.

Despite telling them that he bought the properties himself, they reportedly refused to believe him.

The distressed man appealed to lawyers for advice on how to reclaim the properties, lamenting that he might lose everything he had worked for over the years.
