A woman has stirred widespread reactions on social media after openly sharing her abortion experience, stating that her decision was not influenced by external pressure, medical necessity, or circumstance, but by personal choice.
Personal decision ignites reactions
The lady, who shared her story anonymously on an online platform, said she became pregnant through consensual unprotected sex and made a conscious decision not to continue with the pregnancy.
Her statement, posted earlier this week, has since generated intense debate, with users expressing mixed opinions on bodily autonomy, responsibility, and societal expectations.
“My abortion is the kind people love to judge the most. I wasn’t underage, I wasn’t assaulted, and there was no medical emergency. I got pregnant because I knowingly had unprotected sex, no accident, just my own choices,” she said.
Challenging societal assumptions
She further emphasized that her life has continued normally without regret, pushing back against narratives that often portray women who have abortions as facing inevitable consequences.
“I knew abortion was an option, and I took it. Not because I couldn’t survive or raise a child, I simply didn’t want one. There’s no redemption arc here. I don’t regret it, and nothing terrible happened to me afterward,” she added.
In recent years, conversations around reproductive rights have gained traction globally and in Nigeria, especially following debates in 2022 surrounding abortion laws in different countries, which amplified discussions on women’s autonomy and healthcare access.
