The Nigerian Army has cautioned its personnel against the misuse of social media, warning that irresponsible online activities could compromise military operations and national security.
Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Emekah, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, gave the warning on Wednesday, while declaring open the Third Quarter Social Media Awareness Lecture at the division’s headquarters.
Emekah said the lecture was organised to educate officers and soldiers on the position of the Armed Forces of Nogeria on social media.
According to him, the programme focuses on social media violations and the consequences of non-compliance with the policy.
“Despite the existence of the policy, cases of social media misuse by military personnel still occur and pose serious risks to military operations and national security,” he said.
Emekah explained that the awareness lecture was designed to promote the responsible use of social media and reduce policy violations among personnel.
He noted that the initiative would also help prevent the leakage of classified and sensitive military information through digital platforms.
“Every soldier has a responsibility to safeguard operational information and uphold the image and integrity of the Nigerian Army, both online and offline,” he said.
Emekah commended the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command for organising the awareness campaign and expressed confidence that the lecture would enhance personnel’s understanding of cybersecurity and responsible digital conduct.
Meanwhile, Headquarters 6 Division Garrison has received 126 cadets of the 75 Regular Course (Naval Wing) of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).
The Senior Instructor of the NDA Naval Wing, Cdr. Clement Theophilus, said the cadets were on operational study tour as part of their training programme.
He explained that the tour was designed to expose cadets to operational realities and broaden their understanding of joint military operations.
According to him, the visit was intended to deepen the cadet’s knowledge of maritime security and the collaboration between the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy in tackling maritime crime.
Speaking during the visit, the Commander, 6 Division Garrison, Brig.-Gen. Abubakar Bello, stressed the importance of inter-service cooperation in national security.
Bello said effective collaboration among security agencies was critical to protecting Nigeria’s maritime environment and critical national infrastructure.
“Cooperation remain essential in denying economic saboteurs the freedom to operate in the Niger Delta region,” he said.
The commander advised the cadets to remain disciplined, morally upright and committed to the highest standards of military professionalism.
He urged them to embrace the core values of loyalty, integrity, courage and selfless service, describing sound character as the foundation of effective leadership.
The study tour featured presentations on the activities of 6 Division, particularly its role in protecting critical national infrastructure and supporting joint security operations in the Niger Delta.
