Hackers steal millions of dollars from Polymarket, trading suspended

The world’s largest peer-to-peer prediction market platform, Polymarket, suspended trading on Thursday after hackers swindled millions of dollars from the platform.

“We’ve identified & fixed an issue impacting our international platform, Polymarket.com. One of our 3rd party providers was compromised, and we have referred this to relevant law enforcement,” Polymarket said on X. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily halted trading & are working to bring the platform back online.”

Though Polymarket did not say how much was drained from its users, reports from The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post estimated that hackers stole around $2.5 million from the platform.

The prediction market platform, however, promised to reimburse its users affected by the attack, stating, “Anyone who has been impacted will be made whole. We’ll make this right and are fully reimbursing all affected traders.”

Crypto giant Binance was hit by a suspected cyberattack, forcing the company to suspend deposits and withdrawals.

“Binance’s initial investigation suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions,” the crypto trading platform said. “We have found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. We will share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified.”

Binance said around $6.3 billion was affected, and it worked with its partners to freeze the assets.
