“He Has Never Stopped Improving Himself” — NFF Hails Samson Adamu As First Nigerian To Become CAF General Secretary In 70 Years

Samson Adamu has made history following his confirmation as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to occupy the position in the continental football governing body’s 70-year history.

Adamu’s appointment was confirmed on Thursday, October 29, 2026, marking a major milestone for Nigeria’s representation in African football administration.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) welcomed the development, describing his confirmation as a proud moment for Nigerian football and expressing confidence in his ability to contribute to the growth and administration of the game across Africa.

Adamu, who had served as Acting General Secretary since March 29, 2026, following the resignation of Swiss-Congolese football administrator Veron Mosengo-Omba, now assumes the position on a substantive basis.

As General Secretary, Adamu occupies the highest administrative position within CAF, with responsibility for coordinating the organisation’s day-to-day operations and implementing its programmes and policies under the leadership of its elected officials.

His confirmation represents the culmination of years of experience within CAF, where he has held several senior administrative positions.

Adamu initially joined the Cairo-based football governing body as Director of Competitions, a position that placed him at the centre of the organisation and management of major continental football competitions.

He subsequently became Director of Tournaments and Events, expanding his responsibilities in the planning, coordination and delivery of CAF competitions and other football activities.

His experience in these positions provided him with extensive knowledge of CAF’s administrative structures, competition management and operational requirements.

Following Mosengo-Omba’s resignation, Adamu was appointed Acting General Secretary on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

He subsequently oversaw the secretariat in an acting capacity before his confirmation as the substantive head of CAF’s administration.

His appointment makes him the first Nigerian to hold the position since CAF was established in 1957.

Reacting to the development, the NFF Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, MON, congratulated Adamu and described the confirmation as encouraging news for Nigerian football administration.

In a statement issued by the federation, Ikpeme expressed satisfaction with the appointment and praised Adamu’s professional competence, experience and commitment to continuous development.

“This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud. He is a highly-knowledgeable individual who has never stopped improving himself, and he is well-rounded in the business of football administration,” Ikpeme said.

He noted that Adamu’s knowledge of football administration and his experience within CAF had prepared him for the responsibilities associated with the position.

According to Ikpeme, the NFF is confident that the new General Secretary possesses the administrative capacity and professional understanding required to discharge his duties effectively.

The federation also pledged to cooperate with Adamu in his new role, particularly in matters relating to the development and administration of football on the continent.

“The NFF is delighted and very pleased with this appointment, and we will give him all the necessary support as a Member Association under CAF. We wish him tremendous success in the job,” Ikpeme stated.

The NFF’s reaction reflects the importance attached to the appointment, which places a Nigerian football administrator at the head of CAF’s secretariat for the first time.

CAF, headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, is responsible for organising and regulating football competitions across Africa, including the Africa Cup of Nations, the CAF Champions League, the CAF Confederation Cup and other continental tournaments.

The organisation also coordinates football development programmes and works with national football associations across the continent.

As General Secretary, Adamu is expected to play a central role in the administrative implementation of CAF’s decisions and the coordination of its activities.

His responsibilities will also involve working with member associations, football administrators and other stakeholders to support the effective organisation of continental competitions and programmes.

Adamu’s elevation comes after years of involvement in football administration and tournament management, during which he developed experience in overseeing major CAF competitions and events.

His appointment is also notable because of his family background in Nigerian and African sports administration.

He is the son of Dr Amos Adamu, a former Director-General in Nigeria’s Ministry of Sports and a former member of CAF’s Executive Committee.

The elder Adamu previously occupied influential positions in sports administration, while his son has built a career within the operational and administrative structures of African football.

The confirmation of Samson Adamu as CAF General Secretary therefore adds another chapter to Nigeria’s involvement in the leadership and administration of continental football.

Although the position is a continental responsibility rather than a national appointment, his emergence represents a milestone for Nigerian professionals working in international sports administration.

It also places him in a position to contribute to CAF’s administrative efficiency, tournament organisation and engagement with football associations across Africa.

For the NFF, the appointment offers an opportunity to strengthen professional cooperation with the CAF secretariat while supporting the broader objectives of football development across the continent.

The federation maintained that Adamu’s experience, professional competence and understanding of football administration would be valuable in carrying out his responsibilities.

With his confirmation, Adamu moves from acting leadership to substantive responsibility for CAF’s secretariat, becoming the first Nigerian to occupy the position in the organisation’s seven-decade history.
