The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Zonal Command, covering the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Niger State, has launched a major enforcement operation codenamed ‘Sauka Lafiya’, deploying 3,339 personnel, 69 patrol vehicles, 18 ambulances, four tow trucks, and 24 motorcycles to curb road crashes.
Zonal Commanding Officer ACM Comfort Asom announced at a briefing in Abuja on Monday that the initiative, which commences this week, is designed to strengthen traffic management, reinforce safety enforcement, and protect lives and property across the zone. As road traffic volumes continue to surge, she noted that intensified operational activity is essential to address violations that frequently trigger crashes and congestion.
The operation will prioritise the arrest of offenders for speeding, overloading, mixed loading, mobile phone use while driving, route violations, and driving without a licence. To achieve these targets, the Corps will deploy enhanced highway and urban patrols, intelligence-driven enforcement, speed management operations, routine vehicle inspections, and public enlightenment campaigns. “Preventing crashes is more effective than responding to their consequences,” ACM Asom remarked.
Personnel will be strategically positioned to clear obstructions, curb indiscriminate parking, manage traffic at busy intersections and markets, and respond swiftly to incidents to minimise delays. Offenders—including unlicensed drivers, traffic light violators, seatbelt defaulters, and those under the influence of drugs or alcohol—will face prosecution in line with the FRSC Establishment Act and National Road Traffic Regulations. “The objective is not to punish unnecessarily, but to ensure compliance and safeguard public safety,” she added.
The Corps will increase its visibility around identified black spots and high-risk corridors, while collaborating with other agencies as needed. Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to cooperate fully with FRSC personnel to guarantee the smooth and effective implementation of the operation.
