Luis Alcántara, a Mexican jurist, has been taken into custody in Colombia following serious allegations that he accepted a $2 million bribe to facilitate the release of a notorious international drug trafficker. The arrest stems from accusations that the judge secured bail for Andrew Clark, a 36-year-old Canadian national, in exchange for the substantial illicit payment.
The legal fallout for the judge is significant, as he currently faces a second superseding indictment comprising nine counts of acting as an accessory after the fact. U.S. prosecutors allege that these actions were specifically designed to help Clark evade justice, trial, and sentencing. Should he be convicted on these charges, the magistrate could face a statutory maximum of 15 years in federal prison for each count.
Andrew Clark, who has been identified by U.S. law enforcement as the second-in-command of a massive transnational criminal network, was previously under the leadership of Ryan Wedding, a 44-year-old former Canadian Olympic snowboarder accused of overseeing one of the world’s most violent and extensive drug syndicates. Clark was initially apprehended in Mexico in October 2024 to face U.S.-led charges including murder, attempted murder, and narcotics trafficking. Shortly thereafter, in November 2024, the United States initiated formal extradition proceedings to bring him to justice.
The bribery scheme reportedly reached its conclusion on February 24, 2025, the same day authorities claim Mr. Alcántara received the full $2 million payout. Almost immediately following the transaction, the judge ordered the release of Clark on bail. However, the attempt to bypass the judicial process was short-lived, as the drug trafficker was rearrested in Mexico only days later and subsequently transferred to the United States to stand trial.
Following an exhaustive investigation into the judicial corruption, Colombian authorities apprehended Mr. Alcántara on November 1, 2026. The United States government is now actively pursuing his extradition to ensure he faces the full weight of the charges brought against him in American court.
