Incident in Lafia forces campaign activities to a halt as security operatives intervene.
An All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, was reportedly disrupted by youths suspected to be supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), prompting Governor Abdullahi Sule to order an investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The rally was organised to mobilise support for APC candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other party flagbearers.
According to reports, the incident occurred as Governor Sule and other political leaders were addressing supporters at Lafia Square. Among those present were Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu; Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma; APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda; Senate governorship candidate Ahmed Aliyu-Wadada; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
The disruption reportedly forced security operatives to intervene and disperse those involved, bringing the rally to a temporary halt as participants scrambled for safety.
In response, the Nasarawa State Government directed the DSS to immediately investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable, including alleged sponsors, is brought to justice.
The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Shuaibu Magaji-Labaran.
The government described the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, alleging that it was a deliberate act intended to show disregard for constituted authorities and the office of the Vice President.
It also urged residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding and go about their lawful activities without fear.
