“Discreditable Conduct” — Inspector, Corporal Demoted Over Viral POS Extortion Video

The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers after they were found guilty of extortion and other acts of misconduct in connection with a viral video showing money being received from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale terminal inside a police station.

The affected officers are Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to C Division, Asaba.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the orderly room trial conducted against the officers.

The officers were captured in a viral video recorded on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the police station.

Following disciplinary proceedings, they were found guilty of Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion and Discreditable Conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

As punishment, Jeremiah was reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, while Ehirim was demoted from Corporal to Constable.

The case had earlier sparked public outrage after the video surfaced online, showing a transaction allegedly carried out inside the police station.

The Delta Police Command had subsequently ordered an orderly room trial of the officers and promised that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public.

Reiterating the Force’s position on extortion, CP Oyeniyi said the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, had unequivocally prohibited the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations.

The Commissioner warned that no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.

He said any officer found culpable of extortion, abuse of office or other misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary action.

Oyeniyi urged officers and men of the Command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens.

The police also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of misconduct through appropriate channels, assuring that complaints against erring officers would be investigated and treated in accordance with the law.
