Australian Speaker, Dick elected IPU President with Nigeria, Africa backing

Speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives, Mr Milton Dick, has been elected President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the 2026–2029 term.

Dick was in Abuja last week to lobby the Nigerian parliament for support.

The President of the Senate and Executive Member of the IPU, Senator Godswill Akpabio, had assured him of Nigeria’s backing and pledged to mobilise the Africa Group.

Announcing the results in Arusha on Friday, outgoing IPU President, Dr Tulia Ackson said Dick secured 56 percent of votes.

Dick polled 182 votes, Ms Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, got 124 votes (38 percent), while Senator Rojo Edwards Silva of Chile received 21 votes (6 percent).

“The winner of the election of a President for the term 2026 to 2029 is Mr. Milton Dick, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia,” Ackson declared.

Prior to his election, Dick had called for inclusive leadership that gives voice to countries and parliaments with limited influence in global discussions.
