Atiku returns to Nigeria after overseas trip

Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has returned to Nigeria after a brief overseas trip.

His return was disclosed on Saturday, June 27, 2026, by his former aide, Lauretta Onochie, in a post on her Facebook page.

Sharing the update, Onochie welcomed the former vice president back to the country.

“Welcome Home, Your Excellency.

“The next President of Nigeria, HE Atiku Abubakar, has returned home from a brief overseas trip.

“Welcome home, Sir.

“God bless Nigeria,” she wrote.

Atiku’s return comes hours after he reacted to the Federal High Court judgment that set aside its earlier ruling directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his media office, the ADC presidential candidate alleged that the move was part of an attempt to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

He accused President Bola Tinubu of pursuing a one-party state and claimed the development reflected a fear of a free and fair electoral contest.

The former vice president also warned that efforts to suppress opposition parties through the judiciary could undermine Nigeria’s democracy and erode public confidence in the electoral process.

His comments followed the judgment delivered on Friday, June 26, 2026, by Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside the court’s earlier ruling directing INEC to register the NDC after holding that the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which claimed an interest in the disputed party logo, was not joined in the original suit.
