A Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced a motorist, Abubakar Halilu, to three weeks’ imprisonment following his prosecution by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for dangerous driving, assaulting a marshal and other road traffic offences.
Halilu was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, on charges bordering on dangerous driving, driver’s licence violation, overloading, assault on an FRSC marshal on duty, seatbelt violation and resisting arrest.
According to the FRSC’s RS7.1 Federal Capital Territory Sector Command, Halilu was arrested at about 11am on Monday, September 14, 2026, during a mobile court operation conducted by the Life Camp Unit Command.
The Corps said the defendant, who was driving a Mitsubishi vehicle, was apprehended after committing the traffic offences and subsequently assaulted an FRSC marshal while resisting arrest.
He was thereafter brought before the court for prosecution.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Theresa convicted Halilu and sentenced him to three weeks’ imprisonment at the Suleja Correctional Centre, with an option of a ₦30,000 fine.
Reacting to the judgment, the FRSC described the conviction as reinforcing the rule of law and the obligation of motorists to comply with lawful traffic enforcement.
“The Corps reiterates that its personnel are mandated to enforce road safety regulations in the interest of protecting lives and property, and will not tolerate acts of violence, obstruction or resistance against Marshals carrying out their lawful duties,” the agency said.
The Corps further warned motorists and other road users against attacking or obstructing its personnel in the course of their duties, urging them to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with enforcement officers.
It said dangerous driving and other traffic violations could endanger not only offending motorists but other road users, adding that assaults on officials performing lawful duties would be subjected to prosecution.
The FRSC maintained that it would continue public enlightenment, compliance monitoring and lawful enforcement measures aimed at reducing road crashes and improving safety on Nigerian roads.
