The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to strengthen electoral laws and introduce stricter punishments for electoral offences if elected president in 2027.
Obi made the commitment on Wednesday during an NDC town hall meeting in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, where he presented his proposed changes to Nigeria’s electoral system, stressing accountability, transparency and strict compliance with the rule of law.
He stated that his administration would focus on strengthening political parties and enhancing electoral procedures to prevent manipulation and rebuild public trust in elections.
According to him, electoral fraud would lead to prosecution, including imprisonment for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other individuals found guilty of manipulating election results.
Obi also called for more stringent conditions for candidates seeking elective positions, suggesting that aspirants should provide evidence that they attended primary and secondary school.
He cautioned that individuals who falsified academic certificates or made false claims about possessing the required educational qualifications should face legal sanctions.
The former Anambra State governor insisted that both public officeholders and ordinary citizens must be held accountable under the law, irrespective of their status or position.
He explained that his political ambition was motivated by the desire to build a Nigeria where institutions operate effectively, electoral regulations are upheld and no one is considered above the law.
Obi’s comments came as political parties and potential candidates step up preparations for the 2027 general elections, with electoral credibility and the integrity of the voting process expected to remain key campaign issues.
His proposed changes would require appropriate legal and institutional measures to guarantee effective implementation, while any amendments to candidate eligibility criteria would have to comply with Nigeria’s constitutional and electoral provisions.
The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2026, while the governorship and Houses of Assembly elections are slated for February 6, 2026.
