Woman Jailed 18 Months For Smuggling Cannabis To Cape Verde -By Paul Sanusi

Justice Akintayo Aluko of a Federal High Court, Lagos has sentenced a woman, Akinusi Jumoke, to 18 months imprisonment for unlawfully exporting 1.10 Kilograms of cannabis sativa to Cape Verde.

The convicted woman was given the jail-term sequel to her plea of guilt on charge filed against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Wednesday.

NDLEA’s prosecutor, Cyril Odion Osaigbovo in the charge marked FHC/LAG/CR/771/2026, stated that the convicted woman committed the offence on August 14, 2026, when she exported the prohibited substance without lawful authority.

The prosecutor stated that the cannabis was exported through the National Handling Company Export Shed, a customs area at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, with Cape Verde as the intended destination.

The offence according to the prosecutor was contrary to and punishable under Section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The convict admitted committing the offence and pleaded guilty to the charge, when it was read to her.

Following her guilty plea, the prosecutor reviewed facts of the case, and prayed the court to convict the woman based on her plea, exhibits tendered, and in accordance to the section of NDLEA Act she was charged with.

The convicted woman through her lawyer, in her allocutor, however pleaded with the court to be merciful on her, while promised never to engage in the illicit act.

She specifically prayed the court for fine option in lieu of the prescribed sentence.

Delivering judgment on the matter, Justice Aluko sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, but ordered her to pay an option of N500,000 fine in lieu of the jail-term.

The charge against the convicted woman reads: “that you, Akinusi Jumoke, ‘F’, Adult, on or about the 14th day of August 2026, without lawful authority, exported 1.10 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug similar to Cocaine, LSD, Heroin, from the National Handling Company Export Shed, a customs area/point of the Murtala Muhammed International airport, Ikeja, Lagos State to Cape Verde and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act CAP N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”
