“₦800k to pack dirt we didn’t create” – Jojo of Lele cries out over Ratels’ rising waste disposal fee

Nigerian content creator Jojo of Lele has lamented the rising cost of waste disposal ahead of the next monthly cleaning exercise organised by members of the Ratels community, led by activist VeryDarkMan.

According to Jojo, Ratels members regularly come together on the last Saturday of every month to clean their environment and usually hire a waste disposal truck to evacuate the refuse collected during the exercise.

She revealed that the cost of hiring the truck has increased significantly over time, leaving the group shocked by the latest amount demanded.

“Una know say we dey clean road every end of the month Saturday, and we use to rent dustbin van to come and park the dirt. Before we pay ₦250k, before we knew it they moved it to ₦300k, the last time was ₦450k. Now we’re planning for our next cleaning, and they are now telling us ₦800k. Like una no fear?” she lamented.

Jojo questioned the justification for the latest increase, particularly as the waste being evacuated is collected on public roads by Ratels during their community cleaning exercise.

She further expressed frustration over the condition attached to the service, explaining that the truck operator may refuse to return once the vehicle becomes full.

“₦800k to come and pack dirt that is not ours, and the worst part is that they will tell you that if their truck is full, they won’t come back,” she added.

Her complaint has drawn attention to the increasing cost of waste disposal and the financial burden it places on community-led environmental cleaning efforts.

The Ratels members are expected to hold their next cleaning exercise on the last Saturday of the month, with the latest waste evacuation fee now posing a major concern for the organisers.
