A man has narrated how he walked away from his planned marriage after his fiancée allegedly demanded that her bride price be increased from ₦3 million to ₦10 million during negotiations in Anambra State.
According to the man, he travelled to Anambra with his fiancée and her family for preliminary bride price discussions after already spending more than ₦4 million on items required for the traditional marriage.
During the meeting, the woman’s father reportedly placed her bride price at ₦3 million, citing her two master’s degrees obtained in the United Kingdom.
Fiancée demands ₦10 million bride price
Before the man could respond, his fiancée reportedly intervened, arguing that ₦3 million was insufficient because she knew about a recent technology contract he had secured.
The woman reportedly said, “Daddy, ₦3 million is too small. He just closed a $20,000 tech contract last month. If he really values me and respects this family, he should pay ₦10 million…Anything less is too small for someone like me.”
The man said he was surprised that her father did not respond to the demand.
He subsequently stood up and told his fiancée, “You’re completely right,” before describing a woman with two UK master’s degrees as a “serious investment”.
Man reportedly abandons marriage plans
The man then questioned the foundation of their proposed marriage after his fiancée appeared to attach a monetary value to herself.
He concluded, “So I’ll leave you on the market for someone who’s willing to pay the full ₦10 million.”
According to him, nobody responded as he walked out of the bride price negotiation.
No further details were provided about whether the couple later reconciled or formally ended their relationship.
