Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has summoned a group of young women involved in a controversial street display of underwear in Kano, condemning the act as a violation of the state’s cultural and religious values.
The governor spoke at the Government House during a monthly prayer session after the incident, which circulated widely on social media and sparked public outrage.
“We heard what happened. We were going about our normal activities when some group of young women went to the street to display something. The governor was not aware of that at the time,” Yusuf said.
He explained that he only became aware of the incident after being briefed, noting that he has limited his engagement on social media platforms.
Yusuf, however, strongly denounced the act, stressing that it contradicts Islamic teachings and the moral standards upheld in Kano State.
“We must condemn this act because it is not in our teachings. It is not Islamic,” he stated.
The governor appealed to individuals allegedly encouraging such behaviour to desist, warning against actions capable of disrupting peace and social harmony.
“Those teaching them, I am begging them to stop. Allow Kano to be in peace and allow the people to continue to live in harmony,” he added.
According to him, the girls were brought before him on his directive after he learned of the incident, and they have since expressed remorse.
“When I heard about it, I directed that wherever the girls were, they should be brought to me. They are here now, and as you can see, they are praying,” he said.
Yusuf disclosed that the girls had been cautioned and advised to change their ways, expressing optimism that they would be forgiven.
“We have warned them and they have shown remorse. We should not hear anything like this again,” he said.
He also called on parents, teachers and community leaders to play more active roles in guiding young people and preventing moral decline.
“We want our teachers to advise those instigating young people into wrongdoing to fear God and stop such actions,” he added.
The incident has generated mixed reactions among residents, with many calling for increased moral guidance and youth engagement across the state.
