Defeating security threats requires integrated air power and intelligence synergy – CAS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal SK Aneke, has declared that defeating Nigeria’s increasingly sophisticated security threats requires intelligence-led operations, joint force integration and the effective employment of decisive air power.

Speaking while delivering a lecture titled “Air Power and National Security: The Nigerian Air Force in Perspective” to participants of National Defence College Course 34 at the National Defence College, Abuja, on Friday, 3 July 2026, the CAS addressed senior officers of the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, representatives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as 20 international participants from allied countries.

He stressed that Nigeria’s evolving security environment, characterised by terrorism, banditry, separatist movements, transnational organised crime and other non-state actors exploiting emerging technologies, difficult terrain and civilian populations, demands integrated military operations, a whole-of-government approach and the fusion of intelligence from air, land, maritime, cyber and human domains to enable timely and decisive action.

Air Marshal Aneke described air power as a strategic enabler of national security, providing the speed, reach, precision and flexibility required for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, rapid force projection, border and maritime security, protection of critical national infrastructure and the delivery of precise operational effects while minimising civilian harm.

Emphasising the imperative of jointness, he declared that “No single Service can secure the nation alone,” adding that “Decisive air power delivers its greatest effect in synergy with surface forces.”

He noted that sustained operational success depends on intelligence sharing, joint planning and synchronised execution across all domains, while identifying cyber threats, unmanned aerial systems, information warfare, piracy, arms trafficking and other transnational crimes as emerging challenges.

He further warned that hostile actors increasingly exploit cyberspace and social media to spread disinformation, deepen social divisions and erode public confidence, making strategic communication and cyber resilience indispensable to national security.

Reflecting on the Nigerian Air Force’s six decades of operational experience in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, supporting regional peace operations and confronting contemporary security challenges, the CAS underscored the importance of indigenous capacity development, innovation, logistics resilience and continuous force modernisation.

He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to strengthening its capabilities through indigenous innovation, advanced intelligence systems, emerging technologies and strategic partnerships to sustain decisive air power in support of national security.

Air Marshal Aneke concluded that national security extends beyond territorial defence to safeguarding democratic institutions, protecting critical infrastructure, preserving economic prosperity and ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.

He urged participants, as future strategic leaders, to champion jointness, innovation and inter-agency cooperation as indispensable pillars for addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, reaffirming the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to strategic thought leadership, stronger joint military cooperation and the effective employment of decisive air power as a force multiplier for national security, regional stability and international peace support operations.
