The Jordan Option is the product of a partnership of two men: Dr. Mudar Zahran and me. It would not have been possible without Mudar Zahran. His parents fled Israel in the War of independence and went to Jordan. From there, they emigrated to the US, where Mudar grew up. He earned two Master’s degrees before returning to Jordan, where he applied for and was accepted by the US Embassy in Jordan for their intelligence service.
While living in Jordan, he began to rally the people against the King. In doing so, he earned the enmity of the king, and had to seek asylum in the UK. The King proceeded to try him in absentia; he was convicted and given a life sentence.
While living in the UK in a safe house, he earned one PhD and started on a second one.
He visited Israel on at least on two occasions, and I met him on both occasions. A friend of mine invited some Israeli activists to meet with him to discuss the Jordan Option on both occasions.
We became very close as a result. I had considerable input into what the Jordan Option should entail that was good for Israel and for the Palestinians. After the election of Donald Trump, we decided to make our move.
I organized a conference on the Jordan Option which was held in the Begin Center in Jerusalem on October 17, 2017. It was a big success.
I summarized our agreement in The Impact the Jordan Option Will Have Upon Israel.
Rather than making the case for Mudar, I decided to let him make it himself.
