UK: Fake Conservative Liz Truss quits after party revolt, makes history as shortest serving prime minister ever

Published

on

After a disastrous six-week tenure that saw a virtual revolt within her own party, Liz Truss has done everyone a favor and quit. She made an unapologetic U-turn on tax rates amid a storm of criticism that even captured the attention of the New York Times. Prior to election day, Truss had promised to “push a ‘bold plan to cut taxes’ and grow the British economy.” She also lied about controlling the massive rates of illegal migration, which is turning the country into the “dumping ground” of the world.

Now she’s gone, making her the shortest serving prime minister in UK history. Truss’ only accomplishment, in fact, is making history on two fronts: 1. serving as the shortest tenured prime minister ever; and 2. being the last prime minister to meet Queen Elizabeth II for a ceremonial transfer of power.

The Left Column posed the question when Truss first became prime minister: Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss promises to lead as a conservative, but will she really? The answer came faster than anyone could have imagined. Britain now braces for the next so-called “conservative” leader, a country that is in deep crisis after a series of leaders who betrayed their stated principles, and their people.

“Liz Truss: Shortest serving prime ministers in UK history”, by Matt Mathers, Independent, October 20, 2022:

Liz Truss has become the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history, resigning after just 45 days in office.

After a meeting with Sir Graham Brady, chair of the powerful backbench 1922 Committee, at Downing Street on Thursday, Ms Truss told the nation it was clear she could no longer deliver the “mandate” she had been given by her party just weeks earlier.

The backbench rebellion and market turmoil sparked by the disastrous ‘mini-Budget’ which Ms Truss and her then-chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, introduced in late September, finally caught up to her. Keir Starmerhas now demanded a general election.

From Theresa May to Boris Johnson and now Ms Truss, the UK has had a relatively high turnover of prime ministers in recent years, following the divisive vote to leave the European Union in 2016.

Here, The Independent takes a look at some of the shortest serving UK prime ministers in modern history…..
