The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the minimum monthly income foreigners must earn to meet its financial solvency requirement when applying for a residency permit.
The requirement, published on the UAE government’s official website, varies depending on whether the applicant receives accommodation from their employer.
UAE Sets Minimum Salary for Foreign Workers
Foreign nationals whose employers provide accommodation must earn a minimum of AED 3,000 per month to meet the financial requirement for residency.
Based on the figures provided, this is approximately N1.11 million.
Applicants who do not receive housing from their employers face a higher income threshold. They must show that they earn at least AED 4,000 monthly, which is approximately N1.48 million.
The UAE government states that applicants must demonstrate financial solvency through either a minimum monthly income of AED 3,000 alongside employer-provided housing or AED 4,000 where accommodation is not provided.
Housing Determines the Income Threshold
The difference in the required income is linked to the applicant’s accommodation arrangement.
Those with employer-provided housing have a lower financial threshold because their accommodation needs are covered separately. Applicants responsible for securing their own housing must demonstrate the higher monthly income.
This distinction is important for foreigners planning to work and reside in the UAE, as applicants may need to provide evidence showing that they meet the applicable financial requirement.
Other Conditions Must Be Met
Meeting the minimum income requirement does not automatically guarantee a UAE residency permit.
The government noted that financial solvency is only one of the conditions applicants must satisfy. Other requirements may apply depending on the type of residency permit being sought and the applicant’s circumstances.
Prospective residents are therefore expected to review the applicable requirements before beginning their applications.
What the UAE Rule Means for Nigerians
For Nigerians and other Africans planning to relocate to the UAE, the income thresholds provide a clear indication of the financial capacity required under the published guidelines.
Applicants earning below the applicable threshold may not meet the financial solvency requirement, while those who satisfy it must still fulfil the other conditions attached to their chosen residency route.
Foreign nationals are advised to consult the latest UAE government guidance to confirm the requirements applicable to their specific residency application.
