United States President Donald Trump has appointed Washington-based lobbyist Dr Karl Von Batten to serve as a commissioner on a presidential commission at the White House.
Von Batten, managing partner of Washington-based lobbying and public affairs firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., was announced as a member of the commission on Thursday.
The firm disclosed the appointment in a statement posted on its official X account, describing it as a significant honour for its managing partner.
“Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C. is proud to announce that President Donald J. Trump has appointed our Managing Partner, Dr. Karl Von Batten, to serve the United States of America as a Commissioner on a White House presidential commission,” the firm said.
According to the firm, Von Batten expressed appreciation to Trump for the confidence placed in him and said he looked forward to serving the president and the United States.
The appointment has drawn attention in Nigeria because of Von Batten’s reported professional connection with former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku’s political campaign reportedly retained Von Batten-Montague-York in March 2026 for lobbying and public affairs services in Washington.
The reported 12-month agreement, valued at $1.2 million, was part of efforts to advance Atiku’s international engagements ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Why the appointment matters
Von Batten’s new position has sparked interest because his firm has previously worked for one of Nigeria’s leading opposition figures seeking the presidency in 2027.
However, his appointment by Trump should not, on its own, be interpreted as an endorsement of Atiku or his political ambitions by the US administration.
There is also no indication in the announcement that Von Batten’s new government role is connected to his firm’s previous professional engagement with Atiku.
The specific mandate and responsibilities of the presidential commission to which Von Batten has been appointed were not immediately disclosed in the announcement.
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s vice president from 1999 to 2007, remains a prominent opposition figure and is seeking to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 presidential contest under the ADC platform.
His reported engagement of US-based lobbyists has been part of his broader efforts to strengthen international outreach and raise his political profile beyond Nigeria.
The latest development places renewed focus on Von Batten’s professional activities and could trigger further scrutiny in Nigeria as political parties and presidential contenders step up preparations for the 2027 election.
