Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled coordinated terrorist attacks and neutralized a notorious commander during a series of operations in Zamfara and Katsina States on Monday, July 7, 2026.
The Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force North West, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, disclosed this in a statement issued in Sokoto.
Zamfara: Commander Killed, Attack Repelled in Kaura Namoda
According to the statement, troops of Sector 2 responded swiftly to credible intelligence on an impending attack on communities in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area. Working with local security volunteers, the troops engaged the terrorists in a gun battle and repelled the assault, forcing them to retreat with several casualties.
In a related operation, troops responding to an attack on farmers around Dogon Kade neutralized Alhaji Tukur, described as a notorious terrorist commander and younger brother to terrorist kingpin Alhaji Shehu Bagiwaye. Several other terrorists reportedly sustained gunshot wounds and fled.
Also in Kaura Namoda, troops mobilized to Sabon Gari following reports of terrorist activities. On sighting the troops, the attackers fled into nearby bushes. A follow-up operation led to the neutralization of one terrorist and the recovery of a motorcycle used by the fleeing gunmen.
Katsina: Arms Recovered Along Danmusa–Yantumaki Axis
In Katsina State, troops of Sector 2 on a fighting patrol engaged terrorists along the Danmusa–Yantumaki axis in Danmusa LGA. The troops overwhelmed the terrorists, forcing them to abandon their position.
A subsequent exploitation of the area led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, two magazines loaded with 25 rounds of ammunition, and one motorcycle.
Air Component Thwarts Mass Attack in Zamfara
The Theatre also recorded a major success through air-land synergy. The Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, acting on intelligence, intercepted a large group of about 300 terrorists on motorcycles moving from the Sunke–Kumbo axis toward the Bayazaki riverine area in Gummi with plans to attack civilians.
Lt. Col. Danja said three air platforms were deployed along the terrorists’ route. On sighting the aircraft, the terrorists attempted to hide under trees but were engaged and neutralized with precision airstrikes, thwarting their plan.
The Theatre commended the Nigerian Air Force for the “decisive and timely air interdiction” which it said further degraded terrorist capabilities.
Troops Vow to Sustain Offensive
The Joint Task Force said it remains resolute in sustaining offensive operations against terrorist and criminal elements across the North West.
“The Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA reassures residents of its unwavering commitment to denying terrorists freedom of action, protecting lives and livelihoods, and restoring lasting peace and security across the North West,” the statement said.
