President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after spending about four weeks in Europe, saying he is healthy, fit and ready to resume his official duties.
The President arrived in Lagos from Paris on Tuesday evening, where he spent the latter part of his working vacation.
Tinubu speaks on health concerns
Responding to journalists who asked about concerns surrounding his health, Tinubu said he remained strong and prepared to continue working.
“Rumours will always be emanate from politics. I am hale and strong. I am ready to work. The fact remains that I am here, healthy, sound and ready to go,” Tinubu said.
President spent weeks in Europe
Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30, travelling first to London before proceeding to Paris.
The Presidency described the trip as a working vacation, but the President later extended his stay abroad by several days before returning to Nigeria on Tuesday.
His prolonged absence generated political and public debate, with opposition figures questioning the length of his stay and his decision not to personally attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Presidency defends Tinubu’s absence
The Presidency maintained that Tinubu remained engaged with government affairs throughout his time abroad.
According to the Presidency, the President stayed in contact with officials in Nigeria and continued to provide direction on matters of governance.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at several official engagements, including the UN General Assembly.
Tinubu’s engagements in France
During his stay in France, Tinubu met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.
The Presidency also said the President used the period to engage investors and discuss major investment projects, including the proposed Gateway Deep Sea Port in Ogun State.
President to attend Independence activities
Tinubu is expected to remain in Lagos for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
He is scheduled to participate in official engagements marking the October 1 anniversary before returning to Abuja.
