African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is currently in hospital amid controversy over the President’s prolonged stay in Europe.
Sowore made the claim on Monday while speaking to journalists at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where his party filed a suit against Tinubu, the National Assembly and other government officials over his absence from Nigeria.
“I know where President Tinubu is, he’s in the hospital. I guess when he’s discharged, he’ll return,” Sowore stated.
The AAC has challenged Tinubu’s failure to transmit a written declaration to the National Assembly concerning his extended absence, as well as the National Assembly’s failure to empower Vice President Kashim Shettima to perform the functions of Acting President after the stipulated period.
The suit, filed by AAC National Legal Adviser Inibehe Effiong, asks the court to determine whether Tinubu complied with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution.
Sowore also disclosed that the party wants the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the President.
“But we have taken a position in our party to sue him, and the National Assembly to commence his impeachment. And we’re filing the case today, right at the Federal High Court here,” he added.
The hospitalisation claim has not been independently established in the reports reviewed. The Presidency has maintained that Tinubu remains in charge of government affairs while abroad and has described his trip as a working vacation.
The AAC suit was filed on September 28, with no hearing date fixed at the time of reporting.
