The Senate Press Corps (SPC) is set to host its 2026 capacity-building workshop on Monday, September 28, at the National Assembly complex. The program will center on strengthening legislative oversight and media synergy to combat unlawful insertions in the national budget.
Announcing the event in a statement released on Friday, SPC Chairman Taiye Odewale noted that the theme, “Leveraging Legislative Oversight and Media Collaboration to Safeguard the National Budget from Unlawful Insertions,” was chosen to emphasize public accountability and responsible journalism.
The workshop will feature presentations from notable policy and civil society experts, including the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; CISLAC Executive Director Auwal Rafsanjani; BudgIT Director Oluseun Onigbinde; and Eagle Times Publisher Ikechukwu Chukwunyere.
In addition to discussions on fiscal transparency, the program includes an intensive training session on Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. Facilitated by London-based instructors from Mass Media TX Limited, the digital masterclass aims to expose participating journalists to emerging technologies in modern media practice.
High-ranking legislative figures expected to attend include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and various committee chairmen overseeing appropriations, finance, and media affairs.
Organizers expressed optimism that bringing together lawmakers, civil society advocates, and media practitioners will foster practical approaches to improving public expenditure monitoring and institutional transparency.
