Rivers: LG Chairman Disbands Vigilante Group Over Murder

By Richard Ikuku

Chairman, Andoni Local Government Council, Rivers State, Mr Lucky Otuo, has banned the activities of local vigilante groups in Ikuru Town over the alleged murder of a youth.

Otuo, who also imposed a dusk-to-down curfew on the town, expressed the council’s commitment to the security of lives and property.

Reports made available to newsmen showed that the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday.

The reports showed that the youth was killed, following a rivalry between the local security group and some youths in Ikuru Town.

Meanwhile, ‘Utono Obolo Worldwide’, a socio-cultural organisation in the area, has condemned the alleged killing, describing it as unfortunate.

In a statement, the Administrator-General, Dr Romsan Dressman, urged security agencies to take decisive measures to avoid further breakdown of law and order.

“We have observed with dismay, deepening security challenges allegedly linked to unresolved internal wranglings across communities in Andoni.

“We are urging the concerned parties to embrace peace in order to save residents from further attacks,” he said.

Dressman condemned the escalation of violence in the area, saying the tragic death of the young man was unfortunate and condemnable.

“We commiserate with the family of the victim and all those affected by this unfortunate incident,” he said.
