In a statement issued on Friday, the government said the former military officer died while in captivity despite efforts by security agencies and state authorities to secure his freedom.
According to the statement, the retired General succumbed to health complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his captors.
The government described the development as a painful loss, noting that his death has deprived not only his family and Katsina State, but also the nation of a respected figure.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and Nigerians at large, describing the incident as a “dark moment” and a reminder of the urgent need for a collective and intensified front against the criminal elements threatening the peace of our communities.
The governor reiterated the state’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to tackle insecurity and ensure that those behind the crime are held accountable.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice. We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement said.
The government extended its condolences to the family of the late General and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu.
