Residents of Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have been thrown into shock following the arrest of a man accused of being behind a string of killings and disappearances in the area.
The Cross River State Police Command said security operatives apprehended Akaninyine Eretus alongside an alleged accomplice, 35-year-old Uduak Essien, during an operation that uncovered disturbing evidence linked to multiple murder cases.
The breakthrough came after the reported disappearance of Mr. Okon Ikon. According to the police, a complaint was lodged at the Creek Town Police Post on May 28, 2026, by his son, Mmawan Okon, who raised concerns over his father’s whereabouts.
Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah said relatives of the missing man subsequently carried out traditional inquiries which allegedly pointed to foul play and suggested that the victim’s remains could be found in a nearby forest.
Armed with the information, security personnel comprising police officers, military operatives and local youths launched a search operation in the area. Their efforts led them to a remote hideout deep inside a bush in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community, where the suspect was arrested.
Investigators said the suspect later directed the search team to a location where the severed head of Mr. Okon Ikon was recovered.
Further searches within the forest also uncovered the remains of another victim, identified as Mr. Okonkon, who had been buried in a separate spot.
The suspect is also alleged to have confessed to involvement in numerous killings carried out by a criminal gang operating within the community.
“The suspects are currently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), while investigations are ongoing. Efforts are being intensified to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” he assured.
Meanwhile, the command has also confirmed the arrest of 20-year-old Ibrahim Rua over an alleged stabbing attack in Wanikade, Yala Local Government Area.
Police said Rua, who was employed as a cattle handler, allegedly attacked his employer, Inaku Obok, without provocation. He reportedly stabbed Obok in the stomach and also injured another man, Lukpata Lom, on the head and back.
The injured employer was initially taken to Lutheran Hospital in Yahe before being referred to the Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, due to the severity of his injuries. The second victim received treatment and was later discharged.
“Through the efforts of the Community Youth Chairman, the suspect was arrested and is presently in police custody. Investigation is ongoing. Further developments will be communicated,” the Command added.
