The Oyo State House of Assembly says it has received the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish State Police Services.
The clerk of the assembly, Mrs Taiwo Muraina-Akinola, confirmed the receipt of the bill in Ibadan on Thursday.
“Yes, I confirm to you that we’ve received it and work will commence on it,” she said.
The bill, transmitted by the Clerk of the National Assembly, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to establish State Police Services.
The transmission followed the passage of the Executive Bill by the Senate on June 24, and the House of Representatives on July 23.
The letter, addressed to the state assembly’s speaker, said the transmission was made pursuant to Section 9(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.
The provision requires constitutional alteration bills to secure the required legislative approvals at both the federal and state levels.
The proposed framework, however, does not abolish or replace the Nigeria Police Force.
Rather, it provides that the Federal Police Service will remain the default police service in any state until a State Police Service is lawfully established and certified operational.
