Ohanaeze Sends Warning To Election Riggers Ahead Of 2027

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned politicians, political parties and electoral officials against manipulating the 2027 general elections in Igbo communities.

This was just as this organisation said it would resist attempts to steal votes, impose unwanted leaders or undermine the people’s right to choose their representatives.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural group declared that no governor, political party or influential politician had the right to determine the political future of Ndigbo against their wishes.

It also warned that anyone involved in electoral fraud would face resistance from voters determined to protect their democratic rights.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the factional Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa.

The organisation called on Igbo youths, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to mobilise voters and protect the integrity of the electoral process through lawful and peaceful means.

Politics Nigeria reports that the warning covers Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, as well as Igbo-speaking communities in Delta State, including Anioma, and Rivers State, including Ikwerre communities.

Ohanaeze maintained that eligible voters must be allowed to cast their ballots without intimidation, coercion, vote-buying, ballot snatching or manipulation of election results.

The statement disclosed that the Imeobi, the organisation’s highest decision-making organ, had approved its proposed Igbo Blueprint for the 2027 elections.

According to Ohanaeze, the blueprint prioritises voter participation, electoral accountability, political awareness and the protection of the people’s mandate.

It urged eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), reject voter apathy and participate actively in the elections. It also advised voters to remain vigilant during voting, counting, collation and the announcement of results.

The organisation called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the 2027 elections were free, fair, transparent and credible, stressing that declared results must reflect the actual votes cast.

Invoking the cultural symbolism of the Nzọgbu Nzọgbu spirit and the traditional Amadioha deity, Ohanaeze said the Igbo people’s resolve to resist injustice and defend their dignity should not be underestimated.

It explained that the references represented the collective determination of Ndigbo to reject oppression, political manipulation and attempts to suppress their democratic rights.

The organisation also urged voters to assess candidates based on their integrity, competence, performance and commitment to the people’s interests rather than party affiliations.

It warned that politicians who had failed to fulfil their promises, neglected their constituencies or abused public trust should not expect automatic electoral support.

Beyond the general elections, Ohanaeze called for greater accountability in local government administration, urging voters to scrutinise how public funds and council allocations were managed.

It said any proven diversion or misappropriation of local government funds should be investigated, with those responsible facing the penalties prescribed by law.

The organisation further called on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws, address loopholes that enable malpractice and ensure that electoral offences were effectively investigated and prosecuted in line with the Constitution and due process.

“Ohanaeze’s position is clear: the votes of Ndigbo belong to the people, not to politicians or political parties. No individual has the right to steal the people’s mandate, and no political ambition justifies the subversion of democracy,” the statement said.

It urged political actors, electoral officials and other stakeholders to ensure that the 2027 elections became a defining moment for democratic accountability in Igboland.

Ohanaeze also called on Ndigbo to remain united and vigilant while exercising their constitutional rights without fear or intimidation.

“The message to election riggers is unequivocal: Ndigbo will not surrender their votes, their dignity or their democratic future. The spirit of Nzọgbu Nzọgbu and the symbolism of Amadioha stand as powerful reminders of a people’s determination to resist injustice.

“Anyone who attempts to manipulate the ballot must be prepared to answer for their actions under the law. In 2027, the people’s mandate must prevail,” the statement added.
