No fewer than nine corps members out of the 546 members of the 2025 Batch C of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Borno are to repeat the service year for abscondment.
Five other corps members will have their service extended for periods ranging from two weeks to four months due to absenteeism.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Malam Nasiru Bello, disclosed this at the passing-out parade of the corps members on Thursday in Maiduguri.
Bello said three corps members received state honours awards in recognition of their outstanding Community Development Service (CDS) projects, while three others received commendation letters from the state coordinator.
The state honourees included Tanko Abraham, who implemented a project to extend potable water distribution at Government Girls College, Maiduguri.
The project involved constructing three moulded sand structures to accommodate taps and drilling a water channel to improve access to potable water.
Another award recipient, Oluwapelumi Joseph, executed an education initiative to support public school pupils across Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
Her project involved distributing exercise books, pens and mathematical sets, as well as paying examination fees and providing school uniforms for 40 pupils of Government College, Maiduguri.
Bakare Victoria received an award for her micronutrient deficiency sensitisation project, which included establishing school nutrition clubs and planting fruit and moringa trees in schools within the metropolis.
The state coordinator urged the outgoing corps members to build on the skills acquired during orientation camp and throughout their service year to become self-employed and employers of labour.
He encouraged them to embrace entrepreneurship and contribute to national development.
The coordinator also cautioned the corps members against travelling at night, urging them to prioritise their safety as they prepared to begin the next phase of their lives.
