The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified enforcement operations across the country as part of efforts to curb illegal mining and ensure compliance with mining regulations.
The specialised enforcement unit said its teams, particularly in the South-West, had recorded significant progress in ensuring that mining activities complied with existing laws and regulatory requirements.
The renewed operation is also aimed at protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources and supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to reform the solid minerals sector.
Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah, warned mining operators against violating regulations, stressing that ignorance of the law would not protect offenders from prosecution.
“Ignorance of the law will never be an excuse. Every operator must ensure that mining activities are conducted within the ambit of the law. Those who choose to operate outside the regulatory framework will face the full weight of legal consequences,” Onoja said.
He said the enforcement drive was not only aimed at tackling illegal mining but also at protecting legitimate investors, improving revenue generation and restoring integrity to the sector.
According to him, lawful, safe and sustainable mining practices are essential to unlocking the economic potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The operation is part of the broader reform agenda of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, which seeks to reposition mining as a major contributor to economic diversification and national development.
The ministry has consistently stressed the need for regulatory compliance, protection of investors and the elimination of illegal mining to improve confidence in the sector.
The renewed enforcement campaign also reflects the leadership of the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, whose administration has prioritised the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure.
Under his leadership, the Corps has strengthened support for the Mining Marshals as part of efforts to tackle illegal exploitation of mineral resources and revenue losses.
The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to working with relevant regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that Nigeria’s mineral resources are exploited in accordance with the law and for the benefit of the economy and future generations.
The Mining Marshals warned that operators must comply with mining regulations as enforcement operations continue nationwide.
