The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Aminu Yusuf, has reportedly died after a brief illness, according to sources familiar with the development.
Yusuf was said to have died at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja on Friday, shortly after the Jummah prayer.
A source within the commission told Track News Online that the NPC chairman became ill about five days ago while preparing for a trip to Rwanda.
The source said Yusuf had been battling what was described as diabetes-related complications before his reported death.
Yusuf was also said to have collapsed on several occasions at his office and during public functions in recent months.
Track News Online reports that the NPC chairman collapsed on March 13 during a press briefing and the official launch of the APLS 13 Report.
During the event, Yusuf reportedly experienced difficulty breathing and remained seated while medical personnel present at the venue intervened to stabilise him. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for further medical attention.
Following his reported death on Friday, the source said his remains had been transported to Minna, Niger State, where he is expected to be buried later in the evening.
However, details surrounding the circumstances of his death remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
Yusuf was appointed Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2025 and was subsequently confirmed by the Senate.
He was sworn into office by President Tinubu on December 3, 2025, alongside two other members of the NPC board. The State House identified him as a 65-year-old chairman at the time of his swearing-in.
The NPC subsequently confirmed that Yusuf formally assumed office following his swearing-in ceremony in Abuja.
Yusuf held a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also obtained a doctorate in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, according to the State House.
His reported death comes less than a year after he assumed leadership of the commission, which is responsible for population data and the registration of vital events in Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, the National Population Commission had not issued an official statement confirming Yusuf’s reported death.
